Sahih International
And
when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they
say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably,
it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.
Tafsir
Allah (swt) tells the hypocrites to believe as the people believe meaning the righteous companions of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) And obey Allah And his Messenger by heeding the commandments and avoiding the prohibitions. But the hypocrites reply that they should believe as the fools believe? The fools in this case is meant to be The companions of the Messenger. The hypocrites called them fools and thought that they were the foolish ones. "The hypocrites said,"Us and them having the
same status, following the same path, while they are fools!'' Yet Allah (swt) said that verily the hypocrites are the actual fools. And they are not aware of it. That is because they are so ignorant and unaware of their vicious and devious ways, that they are blinded from the truth altogether. This verse describe their state of ignorance and they think
that they are the sane ones, while they are the foolish. They think
their "defects" are their merits and their good qualities and they think
that they are at a higher level than the Muslims. This verse also indicate to the hypocrites that the only acceptable belief is that of which the companions of the Messenger believe. The hypocrites believed that anyone who tried to show them the right way and the truth, are in their eyes, ignorant and stupid. But the Quran says who can be more ignorant than the ones who deny the clear signs.
Practical Implications
1. The only way to be on the right path is to believe in what the Companions of the Messenger (saw) believed. So we have to have firm belief in our deen and not have any doubts.
Also, the implications are the same as before, don't be hypocritical.
